First, the short answer

Tirzepatide is a prescription medicine. It is not a vitamin, a supplement, or a general name for every weight-loss shot.

What it does

Tirzepatide copies two hormones the gut makes after a meal, called GIP and GLP-1. Between them, the pair lets your brain know you have eaten enough and steadies how you process sugar from food.

Which name matters

Mounjaro and Zepbound contain tirzepatide, but the FDA has approved the two brands for different uses.

Why the source matters

A compounded preparation is not the same product as either approved brand, and the FDA does not approve compounded medicines.

Two details that change the whole search

That means an offer described as “generic Zepbound” is not an approved generic. While a medicine is officially in short supply, pharmacies may make their own copies of it. The tirzepatide shortage was declared over in December 2024, and ordinary pharmacies had to stop making routine copies in early 2025. A pharmacy may still make a version for one patient when the prescriber decides a change matters for that person specifically.

A calmer way through

  1. Learn five words

Ingredient, brand, approved, compounded, and prescriber.

  2. Name the goal

Diabetes, weight, and sleep apnea do not all lead to the same brand or coverage path.

  3. Check the people and product

The prescriber is the doctor or other licensed professional who writes the prescription. Look them up on your state medical board’s website, then check the pharmacy’s licence and the exact product name.

  4. Then compare cost

Ask what the visit, medicine, tests, and follow-up each cost.
